My two beautiful bull babies are doing so well. It's pure enjoyment to watch them learn eachother (half brothers, same sire born a day apart here), the pastures, a stray chicken, a moth, and just about everything else that crosses their paths.
A bit of a scare when one got into the chicken manure and had 12 hours of scours. I treated it aggressively and he is back on track. that part of the pasture is now locked off.
Chip, the slightly bigger roan was banded easily, or relatively so. Don't you just love that kick they give at two weeks old- kinda knocks your boot around but makes you wonder what that kick would feel like at 12 months. Got both his nuts under the band.
But Simon is a different story. I got the band on and realized just one nut was underneath...or maybe the second one was small...or maybe he had only one. I had a heck of a time getting it off to better figure the situation out.
I've done a few of these and I recall that getting just one nut was a problem with another bull later on and the vet confirmed tonight...don't band him with just one nut. It's hard to retrieve the other one later on.
So time is ticking...Simon is growing before my eyes. Very soon he will outgrow my banding tool as I wait perhaps for the other nut to drop.
I could of course wait and do it differently later on...but now I have one member of the team banded and one not and I see another expensive vet bill looming.
Im wondering if they make the bands in different sizes. The tool- which fits around them- is one size and won't accommodate him in a couple of weeks.
Any suggestions?
And yes, the horns stay.
