My Jersey/milking shorthorn calf is 11 wks old. She has only ever nursed from the cow. Never any problems with her. Super healthy. Today I went out to milk the cow and she was extraordinarily full of milk. I don't need all the milk so I don't separate the calf except maybe 2 times a week. And the calf takes the overwhelming majority of her milk so I milk her everyday but I only get 1 gallon. I milked her today and got 4-5gallons!! The calf obviously hasn't drank since yesterday. If it has, it was only a very small amount.
So then I started looking at the calf. Looks normal, except that it has the scours. I started looking around the pasture and there are white scour splats all over the pasture. Then I saw her poop and now the coloring is yellow and its not water but pretty close to it. The calf itself her eyes look just a Hair sunken in. Just a hair. Not much at all. I brought her in from the pasture and took her temp. 102.9. Which probably isn't really that high but she was laying out in the hot sun in the tall grass so I'm sure that raised her temp a bit. I brought her in the barn and I cant get her to drink any electrolytes at all. She's never taken a bottle or a bucket. I tried both. She wont touch it. Her nose is nice & wet. She looks slightly thin because she hasn't drank anything in a while I'm assuming. She's a complete tank otherwise.
I'm not sure what to do. What could be a possibility as the problem is last week, about 5 days ago, my 4yr old let them in the barn and they got into my milkhouse where I store all my feed and ripped open and trampled 4 feed bags of corn, chicken feed, and calf manna. Thank goodness there was only a few # of calf manna left so they didn't gorge themselves on it. But they probably ate a good amount of corn. The calf has never had grain before. Just milk from mom & I'm assuming it grazes a bit too. But I would think that the diahrea would've started a lot sooner than 4-5days later. But could that be the reason for the scours?? I have no idea if she ate any of the feed or not. I know the cow & my goat did. And my cow had the shits but it was the next day already and now is fine.
So, other than the probiotics I gave it, what should I be doing/giving it? If it starts to look more dehydrated and I still cant get it to drink any electrolytes, I will just IV it some lactated ringer or give it Sub-Q but I think that would be overkill right now. I could go down to the Vet and grab a dose of Baytril for it to cover my bases but I don't think the Fever is too bad so I'm thinking NO on that right now. Thoughts?? Thanks!!
**My internet connection sucks so i'll try to update when possible but sometimes it doesn't let me on.
