I bought a buckling to breed to my two girls when he is older. He was bottle fed and is about 10 weeks old. Eating feed and very healthy. He is a Boer and the plan was to let him grow, breed the girls, then butcher. I don't need a full-time buck for two girls. My girls are Nubians. Breeding is strictly for milk. I'm not into breeding for the money on the off-spring. My girls are not registered and I'm just not into that scene. I'd either find good homes for the off-spring or figured I could butcher also. Know it sounds bad but that is why I chose a boer.
It's been a few days. I expected some butting but my queen goat is just downright vicious towards him. The girl who is so loving and sweet is just seemingly wanting to kill this baby to the point where she actively goes after him to attack him. So we've been keeping him penned up at night for his safety. I'm getting a few wethers in about a month who he can be friends with. Not really soon enough.
Not being experienced enough with goats, I did not realize how vicious my dominant girl would be towards this innocent guy. I get the pecking order thing but did not foresee the extent of him potentially getting butted and beat to death. I'm very concerned for his safety and thinking I made a huge mistake. Debating on selling him and using my friend's La Mancha buck. Learned a lesson here.
I don't know what I was thinking. All daisies and roses, and got gloom & doom. After the fact I started doing research on the web, and learned that the buckling should be at least 7 mos before breeding. And keeping them separate is good for planning purposes since they can breed very young. I can keep him separate but I need to get a friend for him in the pen, if I do keep him.
Guess I'm just venting. Thanks for reading.
