I have a dexter cow about 5 years old. she had her first calf last year, during 50 below snow storm. Lost the calf, we did not see the birth, so we assume it was lost due to the temps. I noticed she was bagged up, and acting differently on Sunday the 28th. We brought her into the barn. Her udder is not overfull or uncomfortable looking. We looked for a calf in the woods, the dogs and hubby were unable to find one, and she is not yelling for a calf. So I do not think she has calved already.
Her back end and tail look wet, and looked that way when we brought her in. She had clear mucus hanging when we got her in, and yesturday I noticed mucus hanging. When I looked closer, it was not clear, it was pink, did not look like mucus at all, seemed to look like skin almost. When she pooped, I saw small amounts of liquid coming out of the vagina.
We thought for sure there would be a calf. Kept checking all night. No progression.
I am getting worried though. The skin looking stuff is on the floor today, about a handful, it is thin. There is small amounts of blood on all her poop. Nothing is hanging today. No change in udder, she is eating, and moving around normally. No signs of straining.
I have watched many of our cattle calve, never noticed blood before the pushing stage started. I am confused.
We are staying home from church again, just in case. Am I being paranoid? Is this all ok? Is the blood to be worried about?
We do not have money for a vet, but could make it work if needed. I just do not know how to tell if we need one.
So confused.
