I bought some REALLY green, still kinda wet hay about a month ago. I noticed it was quite warm and I did read here that hay can catch fire. This hay still feels really wet though, guess he balled it while still wet. I know it was a third cutting and he was late to get to it and in a rush to bale it up. So now I'm freaked out it's gonna catch fire and burn my barn down with my cow and chickens in it. I usually have Butter locked up in the barn at night but she wouldn't come in for anything so I had to lock her mama in instead. I cut all the bales open and the ones that felt warm fluffed out a bit. Parts of a bale would be warm and others would be cold. Is there anything else I should do or should this fix the heat problem?
On a side note, I'm contemplating selling Butter. I'm not real sure what to do here, I want a second milk cow but it will be at least another year before I can AI her then another 9 months before I get milk. Then the pain of training a heifer to stand to be milked. I can buy another Jersey from the same place I got Missy. She won't be a high producer, which is fine. But she'll already be in milk I can get her this spring and then I don't have to worry about weaning Butter. However Butter is a better candidate for grass fed, although not guaranteed she will be. What would you all do? If you would sell Butter how much? She is 4.5 months old, never had grain other than stealing a bite here or there from her moms dish, she is halter trained and leads well.
