So back in December I bought a 12-14 month old Jersey heifer from a lady that I had just bought two bottle calves from. Heifer seemed healthy, although alittle underweight, and the lady was going to give me a really good deal on her. I wasn't in the market for another milker, but with the price I thought I would take her home, fatten her up, breed her and then find a new home for her so I could get alittle extra money for our upcoming wedding. Brought her home, and a month later I saw the bull trying to mount her so felt pretty certain she was going to be bred. I never had her checked out by a vet, because our trailer is not very good and she went psycho when she was in it, but was an angel otherwise.(I should have taken her straight to a vet, my mistake). So around March I listed her for sale as a possibly bred Jersey heifer. Anyone that was interested, I repeatedly told them that she was with the bull, so she could possible be pregnant, but she has not been vet checked so I do not gaurantee that. Well a lady in Montana wanted her extremely badly, (I'm in Texas) and her daughter was going to already drive up to meet her, so she told her to find a Jersey to bring back. Once again, I mention the whole situation of my buying her, not knowing much history on her, and the possibility but not gaurantee of her being bred. She buys her, and a few days later her daughter picks her up.
I get a phone call about a week ago, and she says she finally had her vet checked and she is a freemartin and has no uterus. I explain to her I had no idea, and absolutely would've never bought her much less sell her in that manner if I would've known that! I tell her I should've been responsible enough, and took her straight to the vet to get her checked out, but I sort of trusted the lady I got her from. I sold her to this lady for $1200, and she probably weighed 700+ lbs. Well understandably, this lady feels like she spent so much money on what now is a pet. She threatened to take me to small claims court, and so I offered to give her some money back...but she also still has the cow so i cant refund her the entire amount. This is only the second cow I've ever bought and had to resale, and I guess I should've known better. I'm NOT trying to screw this lady over or anyone for that matter! What would y'all do??? I should've had her vet checked, but this lady also bought her sight unseen. I even offered to send her more and closer up pictures, and she didn't want them. I had to sell all my goats so I could get some money to give her. I just don't know how much is fair?
