Our little nigerian had twins, this was her second time kidding and the first time she was owned by someone else and not milked or handled. She lost one of her babies about a week ago. Today I went out to try her out. I am looking for any tips to help the training process.
Keep in mind I am pregnant with twins and in my third trimester.
If I was able I would get right under her and have her up against the wall, but I can only sit on the side of the stand right now.
Hubby built us a milking stand for her. Her teats are 1.5 maybe 2 inches long? I used olive oil with lavender on them and was able to strip and squeeze. Stripping was the easiest to do, but her teats stick out to both sides, so stripping makes the milk go everywhere.
She is kicky, understandibly. Any tips on the best place for me to be so that I can be milking and trying not to spill the milk? Would be nice to milk two handed. Today I sat beside her and reached in from the front. Is it better to milk from behind?
When she is kicking, what should I do? I am used to just sitting down by a new dexter cow and them just going along with it When I just kept my hand on her when she was kicking she stayed calm, and then I kept trying. When I tried to milk her with one hand and restrain her leg with the other she was very scared and started to loose it. Do I just keep on milking her even when getting kicked?
My hubby milks one of the cows twice a day. I plan to milk this lady once a day. Should I just go out every time hubby does, to get her used to being milked?
Do it once a day?
Or separate the kid, and milk at the next milking?
