I just got some scary news!
Seems that a few days ago a full grown male mountain lion was run over and killed 1/2 mile from Centreville (where we used to live in Nebraska). There was also another lion seen on the Blue River, less than a mile from the new place (at one point, the Blue is less than a half mile from the property).
Before we moved out of Nebraska, there was a lion killed inside the neighboring town on Denton -- it appeared to be hunting the residents of the house, it was perched in a tree that overhung their front door.
There was another one killed on the highway by Falls City, another one right on the Kansas line, and one that was captured in the city of Omaha.
Nebraska Game and Parks needs to rethink their position that all the lions killed in the past few years have been either transient/traveling through or were released pets, and that there are no resident lions in Nebraska.
That's too many for all of them to be just passing through or released pets. Personally, I think they're probably like other creatures -- for every one that's seen or killed, there are 10 more that will never be seen.
Anyway, since I have goats and small cattle, the thought of lions in the area we're moving into is quite scary.
Does anyone use Livestock Guardian animals?
DH is against getting a Pyrennese (sp?), he thinks the dog would look too much like a sheep and would itself become a target for lions.
One friend has suggested a gelded llama, another has suggested a gelded jack, another has suggested a Longhorn steer.
So, I'm curious about what animals have been used as livestock guardians by the folks here, and how satisfied/dissatisfied you've been with that particular animal.
