Hi all
We got a couple of calves, a week and a half ago,
We went to get 1 jersey bull to raise to service our 2 girls and then either send to freezer camp or sell as a bull.
The one we went to buy, was a jersey bull. About 1 1/2-2 weeks old. He had a bit of runny (mustardy) poo the day after we brought him home. I chalked it up to the long drive home and the cold weather causing stress. He was drinking fine.
Later turned to full-blown scours and lack of appetite and wobbly but never "down". We bottle fed until he wouldn't take a bottle then started tubing him; we alternated between electrolytes and milk with probiotics.
After a couple of days of no change, he started with a runny (clear) nose so we started giving him antibiotics.
After its 4 day course (as per bottle instructions) he was doing better, taking bottle (with probiotics) back to mustardy poo and no runny nose.
Yesterday he coughed a couple of times after taking his bottle but all else seemed okay. He seemed okay this morning. This evening he doesn't want his bottle (tubed him: more below) and has a runny nose and his breathing is somewhat congested (although not badly) still up and around.
1)I gave him another antibiotic shot tonight, b/c everything is closed and it is all I have. Do you all have any suggestions as to what to do next?
2)Also, I have a question about tubing them. When you are tubing them and about half way through (1 qt) they start giving it back (throwing it back up), what do you do? We crimped it off and carefully pulled the tube out, but didn't feel comfortable trying again tonight. Should we have done something different?
Just FYI: After we loaded the first bull calf, the guy says, "Hey I got this calf, I don't know whether he will make it and I just don't have the time for him, do you want him" well we took him home. Did all we knew how to do, same as above, and lost him 2 1/2 days after we got him.
Thanks so much for your help!
