I went out to the barn to check mama and baby at 5am and found Gracie down with MF. She was still up on her brisket and ears were up. She could not stand, neck was twisted to the right, and she could only look around some with her eyes at her calf. I ran back to the house and got Sara up and we ran back to the barn with Cal/Mag drench and drench gun in hand (5:10am). We gave her 200ml of drench and went inside and called the vet. Vet gave Cal. IV at 7am. It is now 7:50am and she is much more focused, chewing her cud, neck is straight, and she is mooing a little, BUT she still will not stand.
We have had her and calf in the stall. She has had 12% All-Stock morning and evening (1/2 a plastic scoop/not much). All the grass hay she can eat, and a slice/pad of awesome alfalfa morning and evening.
We also gave her warm water with lots of Molasses pre and post delivery. Her udder did get huge the night before calving. She was milked out some in each quarter twice yesterday.
The vet said to separate her from the calf and get her on GRASS. Let calf nurse 2 or 3 times a day.
#1 She is not up to eat grass.
#2 If she does get up, I doubt she will leave her calf in the barn.
Help.
I still have a lot of Cal/Mag drench, and the vet left a huge tube of paste. Not sure of how much Cal. she received IV, but he stopped when her heart started to flutter some. He had the stethoscope on her the whole time. The guy has been in practice for about 30 years and started out as a Dairy Vet. For years now he has operated a small/large animal practice.
8:13 and she is still down. I'm going to the barn and am going to push her around some and see if I can motivate her some to get on her feet.
I almost forgot. He wants us to milk her out when she gets to her feet. I am totally confused at this point.
