I'm sorry I didn't take the time to see if there might be something like this already. Please feel free to direct me if so. OK, so we place an ad here and on CL for our 5 yr. BS cow with her 2 mon. Swiss/Braunvieh heifer, complete w/lots of pictures. Got lots of response, but the 1st young man wanted her. He and his mom came over and spent two hrs here looking at the two, we put them both on halters, he walked them, put the cow in the stanchion, he looked her over, milked all four teats, we talked and he gave us a deposit.
Went home and called back that night and said he wanted her. This was Tuesday of last week. My husband delivered her to him on Saturday morning. He called us Sat. evening to say that everything was going well, he had put two little Holstein calves on her that she took and let her calf finish up. He called again Sunday afternoon to ask a couple questions about one of his other calves and said "Lila" was doing fine. So today, Wed. I come in to hear a message from him saying things just aren't working out. She's kicking the other calves, won't let anything nurse but hers, and won't let him milk her by hand, and has knocked him over three times. This is just so out of character for her. She is a big girl, she's a Swiss. We are going to go pick her back up this Saturday morning - I don't want her in a place where she's not wanted, but this is not good. I hope she doesn't have mastitis, and her milk production will surely be off, if he's not milking her. When we had her, her calf would finish and we would still get about 1 gal/TAD. When we separated them. We gave the calf 1 1/2 gal/TAD and we got about 2-2 1/2/TAD. Last year she peaked at about 7. I've kept the names of the other people that called on her, but what do I say? - She's gone wild?! And we don't feel right not keeping her for several weeks to make sure before we try to sell her again. Not to mention my husband's time two Saturdays in a row driving over the mountain. The young man gave him $50 for gas, and we're going to keep $50 from the sale to cover the gas to pick her back up. So what I'm asking is this: Do cows come with money back guarentees? And what do we say the next time we try to sell one? "Once you take her, don't call back - how suspicious does that sound." We are frustrated, but want to do the right thing. Would love to her how others have handled this kind of thing from both a buying and selling perspective. Thanks, Julie
