We have a 12 yo border collie named Katie. She is getting on in years, runs alot and arthritis is becoming a problem. She doesn't turn herself off very often.
We've put to sleep 2 other dogs this year. A 12 yo BC mix and a 14 yo lab/husky mix (2 weeks ago). We also have an elderly 14yo BC and a 5 year old labrador along with katie. We joke that when The 14 yo passes on we should think of another dog/puppy to keep the labrador young. She likes to snooze too much.
Well the 12 yo BC- Katie heard this. If you don't think they understand this stuff well she does. She gets so mad when we keep her inside for a rest.
Well yesterday evening I was in the field feeding the last group of meat chickens. It was getting dark so i put their feeders inside their houses and closed them for the night an hour earlier than normal. We were beat and wanted to crash early. Well DS has 2 geese out there guarding the birds. The geese would not have anything to do with going to bed early. So I left them out of the house. We do this sometimes and it wasn't raining anyways. I then head to another field to take care of the turkeys. Katie headed that way with us but must have gone back. By 8pm we were still looking for this dog- so much for crashing early. We coulnd't find her. Then DS went to check the chickens and found her outside the fence in tall grass just watching the geese. The geese were snuggled together up against the door of the chicken hoop house. All tucked in for the night. DS put Katie in the jeep but she jumped back out. He had to go put the geese in the house then katie stayed in the jeep.
She is sore today and not moving well again. We've tried different meds and they help her stiffness but then she runs MORE!
I need a sleepy pill for her.
DH talks to her that we just want her to last longer. She just gives him the look that she knows exactly what she is doing and knows better than he does.
Case in point- humans didn't put the geese in and Katie knew this so stayed on the job. I wish she'd bark her location though........
