Ok KFCers--I need some help. This has been a long, hot, dry, and sick summer. First, mastitis question: This is the second go-round w/mastitis for my cow Skye. I treated her the first time w/Today--The instructions say treat every 12 hours twice...and I treated her every 12 for 4 times. Milk seemed clean and clear. A week after treatment, I noticed her qrtr was swollen. Sure enough, mastitis again. I sent a sample off to lab (still awaiting results) and vet gave me spectramast. She's had one treatment of it. Can I give this milk to the bucket calves? Can we drink the milk from the other qrtrs?
I also have a 2.5 month old calf who is presenting now w/"snotty" beige-grey-whitish diarrhea. No smell to the poop. Acting fine. Nursing off mum fine. I can't remember if this is an infection or just too much milk. Anyone know?
And finally, coccidosis. Had a calf present w/the bloody bloody diarrhea, etc. Fecal sample to vet. Sure enough, coccidosis. Dosed all 7 calves w/Corid per label instructions--we used the drenching method so I was sure that all calves rec'd the full dose. The original sick calf is still not quite right. (I treated him one day longer than the label said) He is STRAINING to have a bowel movement. No temp. He walks around w/tail lifted, scrunches down, and pushes. I'm afraid he'll have a rectal prolapse. Since yesterday, I've started Corid again, this time in the drinking water. 300 lb calves are no fun to wrestle to drench.
Any advice--please? I'm so weary of all of this..... And I've had the vet come and check what I'm doing and how I'm doing it..... and I pass her standards. So I'm not sure where all this sickness is coming from. Or maybe I'm just getting a crash course in cow adversity.
