and appears to have retained placenta.
She was ai'd in mid Dec, and never showed any signs of heat after that, even in with Rousseau, so I had a Sept 22 due date on her. She was *supposed* to be my source of milk for fall/winter when BoPeep gets dried off. All has seemed well & perfectly normal, so I had her in with the young bull we have here. Yesterday he acted certain that she was coming into heat. Say what?!?! So I slapped an Estrotect sticker on her, and sure enough this morning when dh went out at 7am it was bright red & she was standing like a rock for the little guy.
I was so upset I just went & did my milking & other chores before I went over to their paddock to check up-close on things. And I remembered that about 3-4 days ago, when I was giving Vanna her treats & fly spray, I thought gosh, she doesn't even look pregnant. I know she was ai'd to a really small bull & she's a pretty big Dexter girl, but you'd think 6 months along I'd see at least a little baby belly. But I hadn't seen ANYTHING unusual to make me suspect she had lost it. But here she was in standing heat!
Well, when I went over to her this morning, I right away saw about 4-5 inches of something "rope-y" hanging out of her vulva...it definitely wasn't any goop from breeding! I had dh come out & look, too, and he was fairly certain it was placenta. I didn't think a cow would come into heat with a retained placenta?? So we called the vet, and he agreed it sounded like she had retained placenta. He had me go pick up 5cc of Lute before they closed at noon to get her cleaned out. I had dh go in & check her a bit better first. He said her uterus felt about the size of a canteloupe & no calf, so we luted her around 1:00 (about an hour ago). So now the waiting begins. I have her penned in the barn corral so I can see what's going on (and coming out). She wasn't real happy about that...but then I'm not real happy about any of this! Crap, crap, CRAP!
If anybody has any insight or other thoughts from any of this, please chime in!
Thanks,
Kim
