Goes unpunished right? I'm starting to believe that...
A friend called & said she needed to get rid of a rabbit & did I want it. I figured sure why not, what's 1 more. I get there & she has FIVE full grown rabbits in an 18"x24" cage. No food (dish or feeder) in sight & just a giant slimy green bowl of what was once water. I didn't say a word just asked which she was & walked to the truck for my box already regretting having answered my phone.
She ended up saying she was going to let all the rest go (in the field) b/c she was tired of messing w/them. I offered to take them all b/c I knew a couple people who'd give the rest homes. Dh picked up the cage & it was pushing 70-80lbs btwn the rabbits (5x10lbs) & piss/manure. It was beyond disgusting. We got everybody home, bathed & into separate cages. The other's went to their homes after I was sure they weren't sick.
Apparently (& not surprisingly I guess) the female was pregnant & had babies. She bit the neck of all of the babies & killed them all but 1. Dd found the bloody mess & a freezing, stiff baby on the ground being pecked by chickens that was screeching. Obviously the remaining baby died that night. I am so mad at myself for rescuing those damn rabbits.
The doe is pushing 2 & has raised litters before. There was no stress or craziness by them. She was in a quiet, secluded secure nice cage. She did NOT have a nest box but she did have a big pile of hay I give them to make a little burrow in or eat. A cold front blew through 2 days before so I gave them all extra hay so she had a bunch; they're out of the wind/weather though.
Why'd she kill them all? She's healthy & happy now w/not a care in the world (rabbit-wise). She'd been out of rabbit hell for 2.5-3 wks & seemed perfectly content & adjusted. Would you give her another shot or cull her?
