I'm pretty angry with my daughter and her friend (next door kid) because they thought it was funny to encourage the heeler pup (1 year now) to chase the momma cow. I told them to stop because I didn't want the dog just chasing cows but they did it behind my back some more.
End result - if I'm trying to work in the pasture now, the dog will go after one particular calf (who likes to run) which gets the momma really upset so she goes charging to her calf hollering, which delights the dog, and before too long the whole herd is running around the pasture with the dog nipping at their heels to go faster!
When they get tired they go back to grazing and the dog comes back to me.
The dog WON'T listen to me or stop chasing them for me. Which I think means he's not a great working dog, aren't they supposed to herd them on command and not just chase them?
Now I'm not sure what to do! People around here have heelers and use them as working dogs. But they all say you don't train them, they just figure out what to do because they're so smart. But I've never seen a working dog in action so I really don't know how they keep them from "working" when they don't want them to! I see them running loose so I'm pretty sure you don't have to pen them unless you want them "working". Or do they just shoot the ones that don't listen?
I'm thinking of getting a shock collar and giving him a jolt if he continues to chase them when I've tried to call him back.
Need help here!! I'm so sure if he ever chases anyone else's cattle he'll get shot on the spot! And I'm pretty worried he might run mine through a fence and hurt them all, or give the old girl a heart attack.
