Last night when I went out to tuck everybody in for the night, I discovered Ladybell in early labor. So I moved her into the stall, and decided to hang around & keep an eye on things....I realized that both other times she calved here I missed the birth & just found a newborn in the stall with her.
Well, at one point when she was having a strong contraction, she walked over to the wall & started pressing her nose...HARD...against the little ledge formed by the lower boards on the wall. And I mean she mashed it for all she was worth...needed a really good endorphin shot I guess! OH, I laughed...too bad a didn't have the camera with me, because that would've been a great pic....hunched up, tail out, & mashing her nose on the wall. She only did it that once that I saw, so I guess that did the trick for her. Smart old cow! ;D
I had posted on the March calving watch that "just for the record, I ordered a dun heifer". Well, she filled that order perfectly! Her actual due date was the 21st, and I've been telling Ladybell since then that she really should just give me an Easter heifer. ;D Really, this cow is just so obliging! So, here are the required pictures, taken this morning.
I think she's so pretty! In the second photo you can kinda see how skinny she is. Ladybell's heifer from last year, Iris, was the exact same height & heart girth, but was 10 lbs heavier! Iris was sired by Rousseau, this one by Mace, a smaller, lighter bull. Incidentally, the two heifers do share a birthday. Iris was born 3/29/12 around 10:30 AM, this one 3/29/13 at 10:25 PM...how crazy is that!?
I am HAPPY with my Easter gift!
