Thyme is down. She went down last night sometime. This morning she couldn't lift herself. It would seem so obvious that the weight of the calf (ves?) is keeping her from lifting all the weight. when she tries, rear legs splay out behind her. Even on a good day she struggling to get up under her weight (maybe overconditioned a bit, but her body type has always been thick ribbed)
She is due to calf with her second calf in four days. first calf was no problem. She has never been a problem.
I gave her a tube of calcium gel. The backup vet came, a really good vet who gave her IV for calcium, bananmine, B vitamins and saline.
She perked up..but had never really been sick looking.
He checked the calf...mucous plug still there calf alive.
Lots of advise from friends in the business and the vet believes maybe mastitis brewing could have brought it on...or perhaps an injury- but not likely at night when she doesn't typically move around much. other cows with her but they don't fight.
Test results came back that there was no calcium problem. liver good potassium on the low side but okay. All okay.
So what the heck? She cannot get up. now a day.
there is almost no hope of getting a tractor to the shed where she is, it would not hold in the deep mud. nothing overhead to hold her up.
she is eating a drinking a little, not a lot and am trying to get her to roll from one side to the other, which she seems to be doing.
Here is the question..
He left me with the drugs to induce labor...either by natural process or c section. I could give those tonight and expect it to happen 36 hours from now. but my inclination is to wait until morning to see how she is. I also have Naxel for the possibility of mastitis (but can't see how this would be the result)
Thoughts? thanks
