I have a 10 year old mix breed dog. He is mostly kelpie with some short haired collie, a tiny touch of border collie & a touch of dingo thrown in. (This was a deliberate mating - some people here prefer to breed cattle dogs according to what works & what they need, not sticking to pure breeds).
Anyway ... the past maybe 2 years in summer I noticed scabs around the base of his tail from where he has been chewing. He is a short hair, but he does have a lovely double coat & this was well advanced by the time I noticed it. I have several dogs & sometimes, despite HEROIC efforts & lots of $'s (people with multiple dogs will know what I mean) they do have fleas.
I usually don't have to worry about fleas in winter but I did see one on one of the dogs the other day, & where there is one there are more
I checked Dozer & sure enough he has what I am calling "hot spots" again.
Maybe he has developed a flea sensitivity over the years? To the best of my knowledge he didn't have this until maybe 2 summers ago. I have clipped the hair & washed the area with the shampoo the vet prescribed - "Malaseb" I think.
I am pretty broke right now & it would hurt to have to go buy Advantix for all 6 dogs (& Advantix & Frontline are not working the way they should any more for me anyway - I have given up on Frontline completely).
I found an article online about using Cydectin PourOn on dogs - obviously off label. I am wondering if I should try it? It doesn't say it does fleas though Also, with this dog having a bit of short hair collie in him I am worried about the ivermectin/collie thing. I don't want to risk injuring or killing him - but if there is a cheaper alternative to using Advantix I would love to know.
What experience do you guys have with this? Any advice or ideas please?
