On Saturday I had a surprise visit from a lady that I bought hay from last year. While we were standing in the door talking, she mentioned that she has an Angus/Hereford mutt cow that she is boarding at a neighbor's house. Her husband thinks it's silly but the cow lost her calf this spring and was all alone. Her parents used to own a dairy in the area and, of course, the conversation turned to milking beef cows. I mentioned that I'd fed 5 cows on 5 tons of hay last winter and she went
"How did you do that?!" My mom jumped in (I love it when my parents, who constantly question my decisions when it comes to the cows, jump in and are as passionate about them as I am) and was explaining all about how it's the breeds that "we" have. "They are super hardy and feed efficient and are just built for this climate." This poor lady was going on and on about how nobody has a bull around here because they just cost so much to feed and I told her about Cody. She immediately asked to see him so we hiked out to where he's staked out. She was so excited and was already trying to figure out a way to get her girl bred to him.
We also went to see Daisy's calf, Cody's first, and she was very impressed with him, which tickled me pink. I love that my Cody has beautiful babies. ;D She also confirmed my suspicions about LeBoeuf. He is a very awkwardly put together animal.
That probably explains why he's not growing the way I want. She pointed out an invasive weed that can take over my pasture so I need to get out there with my shovel. All in all, it was a pretty informative and enjoyable visit.
Plus, I may have an AI tech available in case I ever want to do that, and I may be able to pimp lease Cody.
