We just had some sad news -- DS, DIL, and the grandkids, are moving back to Nebraska at the end of the month.
Yes, I'm upset, but I understand that they have to do what's right for them and DIL really isn't happy down here.
So, I'm trying to look ahead.
When they came down here we mortgaged our house and bought a property for them -- a nice little 2 bdrm house on 2-1/2 acres, with a nice pond in the back. We charged them enough rent to cover our payment.
We've decided that we're going to lease the house after they're gone -- just the house and the fenced yard. With the housing market around here, just the house and yard will rent/lease for more than enough to cover our payment.
That will leave us with a 2 acre fenced pasture and pond in the back, which after today will have it's own separate access. The property is 4 miles from us.
I'm torn between buying a couple of weaned steers to put on the grass or putting out the work to cut it, carry it over here, and feed it to my girls on a daily basis. We still don't have much pasture over here -- seed just went in and the rains are just starting, so I'm feeding hay. I know the gals would love the grass, but I also know the work it would take to cut and carry what they need on daily basis.
I suppose I could probably find someone to bale it for hay, but have no idea what the cost would be down here.
My other thought is to put a couple of bred beef heifers on it -- then I wouldn't have to buy baby beef calves to raise for the freezer.
So many ways to go -- I'm getting muddleheaded.
So, if you guys had 2 acres of fenced pasture, 4 miles from where you live, what would you do with it?
