OK... had been milking one of Min's teats since she lambed with only a singleton and she's built for two. The lamb was only taking one side. Twice a day for a week, once a day for a week, then went to change to every second day and bam. Mastitis.
Bag felt ok, but teat felt like it was full of tiny marbles and it was really swollen. When I milked I got two seperate streams, one would be milk and one would be brownish clear liquid. Erk...
Vet comes and investigates, take sample, gives her a shot of Mamyzin and leaves me two vials and seven needles. She needs 3ml per day IM. Oh joy.
Goes to put in a teat canula and can't find one, he squeezes out as much clotty stuff as he can and tells me to come and get the canula in the am.
I did her again later that night, and again early this morning. Picked the canula up and we put it in at lunchtime so she'd have time to calm down before I did her again early arvo and late arvo.
OMG... putting the canula in was pretty traumatic for both of us !!!! She was grinding her teeth in pain, I feel terrible about it :-(
It's a "Dr Larsen's Teat Tube" and has a screw cap. I'm to leave it in and open it when I milk and then cap it again. She's also got Mastalone Blue to squeeze into it at the last milking each day.
So... warm towels and massage and get every last drop of everything I can out. Have offered her comfrey which she has eaten some of. Would soaking a comfrey leaf in the hot water for the towels help ? I have some Lush foot balm which has peppermint, arnica, almond oil, cocoa butter, spearmint and lanoline. It's warming, can I put that on her udder ?
Any other ideas ??
