Just found out yesterday that hubby's pit bull has diabetes...it's been a long 18 hours...and so the long road begins...
It first started when we noticed that she was losing weight about 6 weeks ago...thought it was that she didn't like her food, so we changed food and she liked it, only to notice she wasn't interested in eating again and that her water intake increased and she was peeing more frequently...thought she was drinking a lot of water to compensate not eating...so I talked to a friend who used to be in the (human) medical field and who also experienced diabetes in a dog, since he used to have a dog that had it and said that it was a very likely possibility that Hemi had it too...so we took her to the vet yesterday where they ran bloodwork and confirmed what I thought it was...so then we had to take her to the emergency clinic where she needed IV fluids and to have her blood sugar monitored overnight because she was keto-acidotic...we were told we had to be there around 7am this morning to pick her up and take her back to her normal vet during the day for more monitoring. Well plans changed this morning when we got there. Hemi was not impressed with the hospital stay and missed us, so by the time 5am came around, she had had enough of the poking and prodding and was very uncooperative with the clinic staff. So when we got there around 7, we were told that she was just going home and that her normal vet would be in contact today to plan our course of action. Basically, she's gonna be treated on outpatient services...so we pick up the insulin tonight, take her back to the clinic for them to teach us how to administer the shots, and then stop at petco for a small bag of her new food til we can afford a bigger one after we get paid tomorrow...normal vet still has to monitor her, but it won't be in-house...definitely will be a lot of appointments, but thank god for CareCredit, it's a life saver
