o.k. Went to milk last night about 9pm Mocha came in as usual, got her cleaned up and started milking, about halfway through she started kicking. Eventually we just had to stop because she was starting to hold it all up. This is not usual. I did notice that the left side standing behind her was slightly full. I fed her some alfalfa flakes, and some grass hay. and went to bed. THis morning, my husband went out and said she had not even touched her hay from last night. And did not drink any water this morning at all. I went out about 10am to milk she still had not eaten anything and it took me a while to get her up from a laying position. When I did she just sort of stood there every now and then kicking at her belly, Then she wanted to lay down again. I ran my hands over the left side again and it felt like a rock inside, very hard. I also notcied that she had only pooped once over the night hours where there is usually three or four piles that I have to clean up and she was not shewing her cud. I called our vet, he came out and looked at her. And she had absolutely no sound in her rumen at all. So conclusion is she has an impacted rumen, (hopefully not an impacted abosoaum? fourth stomach) He tubed her with 3/4 of a 5 gallon bucket of water, calcium and something that is similar to Milk of Magnesia to try and get stuff moving through again. He said to leave food in front of her. And within 24 hours things should start moving through. She has still not pooped tonight, just got back in from milking, and she was chewing her cud when we were out there, and she had cleaned up most of the alfalfa from the previous night. I really didn't want her eating anything until she empties that rumen of what's in there.
Any one have any thoughts on this? Should I restict her diet a little bit so she doesn't eat as much until her gut empties out.? Her tummy is even tighter tonight then earlier today if that is even possible. If she lives through this is there anything I can do in the future to keep the rumen working properly? Also found out she is 4 months pregnant, are we going to lose the calf? I can't really afford to lose her, let alone the calf. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks
Bridgett
