Well, CALPC x2
Meet Parky and her foster calf, Nibbles!
Perky is a 2yo approx 4wks fresh Jersey/Guernsey. She didn't make the dairy lineup, the guy said she was too much of a stinker to behave properly in the parlor so he put a heifer calf he had on her and she took right to her. (Perky calved a cold wet night and I was told her bullcalf was dead by morning, poor critter)
I was worried about her condition, being so skinny, but his feeding program is a one size fits all, and unfortunately, it wasn't working for her and she was skin and bones. (One of the reasons I hadn't posted yet, as we've had her just over a week and she's put on about 100lbs since I brought her home, she was that bad, and could use another 300lbs)
Nibbles is the heifer calf. 9wks old and 3/4 Holstein 1/4 Jersey. I got to see her mama, who is in the dairy lineup and she's beautiful with a picture perfect udder and good confirmation, PLUS she does very well on grass/hay w/just a little grain at milking.
Perky has been an interesting character to deal with, but I've gotten her to where she's up in the stanchion and allows me to fiddle with her, her udder, and milk her some (don't get much, but I've not seperated the calf at all since its just training at the moment) I had her and the calf in a stall for 5 days and let her out to roam the barnyard w/the rest and that was a mistake. Got her back in the stall, along with the calf and Jezzie and now she's figuring out the routine and calming down a lot. I've been gradually working on her grain and alfalfa intake, bumping her protien down as she was on 18% at the dairy.
Enough rambling.. here's pictures! Warning, she looks very rough.
This was the day after we brought her home
Day 3 here
Day 5, when I turned her out and she was sunbathing
Here is Nibbles, cudding while laying in the sunshine
And here is Jezzie and Perky, sniffin eachother for the first time
I'm hopin in another few weeks she'll really start to shed the nasty coat as she's already growing a very nice healthy undercoat. But her nutrition was so out of whack, I'm just glad she's healthy right now
