Oh goodness! Many of you read my other post about my cow Blue. Well, today I went to a farm for the second time to pick out two Jersey cows. I was really excited and chose two and took them home. One slipped though, and wouldn't get up. She didn't seem concerned, and she didn't flail around, she just sat there and occasionally made an effort.
Of course, the vet was called, and withing about 10 seconds of looking at her, she got up. She was in pain and wobbly, so he gave her some pain meds and an anti inflammatory. He noticed she looked pale and took blood.
He called me back a bit ago, and said she is anemic. He said it could be poor nutrition, but it could also be anaplasmosis or leukosis. I called the guy I bought her from right away, and he said he is willing to work with me if something is wrong, but lets see what the tests say. I am okay with that, and with a sore hip I don't want to transport her anyways. Plus, I like her and don't want to take her back unless I need to!
So, we are going to do the blood tests and they take a week to get back As far as nutrition, I'm really hoping for that! They had a grass bale only, and I didn't see any licks or places where they were grained. The grass bale wasn't anything too special... not terrible but not too nutritious looking.
So, I was so upset about Blue, then so happy to get the girls and try to move on. Then so upset that one fell, then so happy she got up! Now I'm tentatively hopeful with a side of "Why the hell am I doing this?"..... I will cross my fingers and hope it is nutrition. She is shaky but loving the alfalfa, and she is bright eyed and alert. Ugh!!! I really thought she looked decent at the place. A little thin, but my herefords would get a little bony on grass hay only too.
