We are starting on our barn/shed and I need some help with the design. We live in CA, and don't need much in the way of protection from the elements. Our only need is really a roof to give them shade and keep them dry when it's raining. The area we have available for stalls and pasture isn't very large, so I don't want to build a barn that is bigger than necessary. More barn space = less pasture space. We do, however have free access to water, so the pasture will be carefully irrigated year round.
My original thought was to build something along these lines, minus the walls, just open pole barn style. Sorry, I don't know how to post a picture, but here is a link

We would have the stalls would also open to the back which is where the pasture will be and I was planning on doing 16x16 stalls and an 8' overhang. I need one stall for my horse, a spot for milking, and a spot where I can separate the calf at night. I also need to be able to lock the cow in at night, since our pasture will be small. Should I do smaller stalls? How much space do I need for milking? DH is building me a really nice stanchion with a ramp and platform and rails on the side, it is 3'x6' plus the 2' ramp. So total length is 8', if that is in a stall how much room will she need to walk around the back and up the ramp? A 16' stall would give her 8', which I think should be plenty. Or should I have the stanchion be in an open area that is smaller, like if I divide one stall in half and don't put a back fence on half so it opens straight to the pasture and use that for milking?
I hope this is making sense! If you have any input please let me know!
