I had a thread going about the birth, but I have some questions specifically about Rosie now. Here is the info:
She calved at 8:30 am yesterday. Passed the placenta about five hours later. She had two buckets of molasses water before the birth and one after. The calf was stuck and had to be pulled (very hard!) by the vet. Rosie went down right after he came out and didn't get back up for about an hour. She had calcium paste an hour after the birth, 8 hours after and then one more this morning. She picked a little at her hay yesterday after the calf was born and throughout the night, but not much today. She will eat grain a little more enthusiastically, but still not great. She took good care of the baby yesterday, but is not fussing with him much today. Her temp is 100.8. Her breath smells normal. Her ears are warm at the base, a little cooler at the tip. She can get up and down on her own to get water. She is not shaky. I have keto strips, but I haven't gotten her to pee for me. She is about 9 years old and has a very creaky hip that makes it hard for her to walk even when she hasn't just given birth.
I gave her Rena's drench and 10 ml of B complex two hours ago to hopefully get her going. I wonder if she is really sore from the traumatic birth and not feeling like eating.
What can I do for her and what am I missing?
Thank you so much you guys! This is my first calving experience and thanks to this group I knew what to do and when to call the vet. You guys are awesome!
Jamie
PS - I have decided taking care of a momma and new calf is MUCH harder that having my own baby!
