Hi all,
Our little almost 3 month old Dexter calf, Daisy, is acting weird...sorry this is a little long...just want to give all the details
Got home this afternoon and she was laying out in the field by herself, which is odd, so I called to her. She lifted her head, but then ignored me. Went up to the house to get my boots, and when I came back she had gotten up and moved, again kind of ignored me when I went and talked to her. Her momma came to investigate and she got up and ran from her. That's when I noticed that she looked a little sunken in her belly and mommas udder was completely full to the brim. Daisy retreated to lay under the tree she was born under and started kicking her back legs toward her belly sometimes, then toward her head other times. Again, just not acting like herself, and acting like she's uncomfortable.
Put the halter on her cause I wanted to see if she would nurse if momma was in the stanchion and had to really put my back into dragging her across the field to the pen...took maybe 5 steps and she dropped like a sack of bricks and refused to get up. Ran to the house to grab the phone, called vet and then hubby to tell him to come load the trailer.
While I was rounding kiddos up, hubby got home and Miss Daisy was in the spot she dropped, but saw him coming and jumped to her feet and ran to momma. She then started to half heartedly nurse, then with a little more gusto, then stopped without draining momma...she usually spends 10-15 minutes going from quarter to quarter to get every last drop.
She is still kicking her back legs, but also acting a little off-balance??
Here's the breakdown:
-temp is 102.8
-saw her pee & poo (almost like a cluster of goat poo)
-nursed but not as much as usual, and not interested in hay or the alfalfa we give momma
-no visual signs of bloat
-gave probios
-acting dizzy/offbalance
-occasionally holding tail straight up in the air
-not frisky at all
-spends the day with momma and a 1 yr old heifer(never seen any friction between her and Daisy), separated at night for 12hrs
-no changes in feed, eats a little alfalfa with momma in the morning during milking, pasture is bone dry, free access to good coastal hay
So:
-What should I be doing?
-What should I be watching for?
-Any ideas as to what's going on?
Thanks in advance!!
