This happened to a friend of mine and I am wondering what the thoughts of the board members are.
A friend of mine's granddaughter is VERY VERY VERY involved in 4-H and is 16 years old. She is doing a beef project and had worked really hard and and got a very nice, registered angus heifer. She studied up, chose a top of the line bull, and AIed the cow herself. The pregnancy had to be confirmed by a vet for her project, so at 4 months post breeding, they hauled her to a vet. I am familiar with the vet and he is experienced and qualified with a good reputation. So, he palpated the heifer and pronounced her open. They gave her lute to cycle her for another shot at AI. She aborted a calf. Would it be easy to miss a 4 month calf? From what I personally have experienced with preg checking, I think it would be hard to miss it. But, I have never palpated one, either.
I don't know if they are looking for any recourse, but they are pretty mad. Which I don't blame them. But, on the other hand, to a certain degree I have to wonder how much culpability they themselves would have. If they have enough knowledge to AI, would it be safe to extrapolate out that they should be able to preg check and question the accuracy of the vet? Personally, I *think* I would have checked myself. Maybe not though. When an experienced person tells me something I tend to say, "Well, you know more than I do, so you must be right."
I am just wondering what you all would think or do if you were in this boat. It isn't going to make a difference, I just tend to pick things apart......
