Hello,
This is our new heifer-calf Molly, a Dexter born in March of this year. She is a very friendly wonderful little calf who hopefully will become a great mother cow and milker some day.
I am concerned about her horns though. The person we got her from tried to dehorn her. It was his first time. I am not sure if they look normal and he did a good job, or if they need more attention. They seem to be still growing, or at least to have pointed material under them. They are wiggly. There appear to be "caps" on the top of them. They are not loose. Maybe I could pry them off with effort, but Molly jerks her head away so I leave them alone. I am not sure what the method of removal was and am trying to find out. I believe it was done around May.
Do you think this looks like a normal dehorning job? Should I just wait? We would have loved to have kept the horns, but they are gone and now we just want to make sure Molly is healthy. I have read that Dexters can have the regrowth grow back into the head if they are not properly removed and it can take up to 5 years to notice this and at that time there is little that can be done. We hope to have Molly much much longer than 5 years.
Do you think we have a problem or do these photos represent the normal processes after a horn removal?
Here are some links and photos:

Thanks for your help. We just want to determine ifthere is a problem or not and if there is get it taken care of.
Thanks,
andy
