Hope I can explain without confusing everyone.
Mimi freshened on the 8th of this month. She had a big calf and I had to go in and turn his head just a little to get him out. She passed the afterbirth within 3hrs. All seemed well until about 5hrs after delivery. She was showing signs of MF so we gave her more CMPK seemed better. The next morning she seemed distant and not as interested in her feed but did eat most of it. Watched her for an hr or so and she would rock on her back feet & seemed like she was in pain (temp 101.8). Called a vet out from GA and palpated to make sure all was ok inside(said yes) we gave more CMPK and had me give her another that night. We also gave the Excede & Flunixin Maglumine. I tested her for ketosis while he was here and she was neg. Over the next few days she seemed a little better each day. I kept checking for ketosis every day, all neg.( all the while increasing her feed). On day 3 I got a trace of ketosis so we called the vet again and we were told to give the propylene glycol(sp)for 5 days. We did and Mimi has had a good appetite so we thought all was going to work out. She has had a good amt. of edema so we rub with cayenne & olive oil. Udder is still very firm but no lumps. We milk with a machine and she lets down well and we strip. Calf is with her 2x a day and milk is wonderful. She shocked us by giving us 6gal a day + feeding a bull calf who really eats well. We had her feed at del. to 14lb and have now increased it to about 22lb, we have hay & free choice minerals also went and got some pelleted timothy hay to give as a snack & she gets 4-6cups 2-3x a day.
Now to my problem. Last nites milking she was fine until about 3/4 of the way thru. She started to breath very heavy and did not want to finish her food. Ate all but about a lb. or two. We took her temp. 106.2 she had a moderate ketosis reading and had pretty runny poop & seemed to go poop more than usual. Called the vet & he told me to just give her 4 240mg bolus of aspirin and call if she did not get the temp down to below 104 in 2 hrs. We gave her a puddle to stand in and sponged her down, she got prop. gly again. She still was picking up her feet and kinda dancing from side to side but seemed to be improving. I then striped each quarter into a sm bowl and found some strings or odd lumps from one rear quarter (not alot but enough to see). I have ordered the cmt test from Jeffers but won't have them until Tue. I'm going to assume we have mastitus and keep up the rubs & lots of milkings etc. until I get the test. My question would be could she spike a fever that quick over mastitus? and why would the milk not taste salty or off. I filter the milk and have not had strings or lumps until last nite. Or am I dealing with a different infection. The ketosis had been neg. for many days but went up to moderate and I have even thought of DA too. I tried to tap and heard no ping but not sure if I would even know a ping. Rumen is working like usual and no grain in her poop, no bloat and today she is eating grass & hay and grain and temp was 103.8. But my gut tells me something is still wrong and I'm just not sure what to do. I can have the vet out but not the guy from last nite. Would rather have the original vet who came the first time( he seemed more knowledgeable). I hope someone can help with Mimi because I'm stuck!! Thank you so much. If you need any more info. I'll be glad to answer as best as I can.
Thank you
Tina
