I have my brother visiting from CA and he's been helping me a lot with the afternoon chores (and I LOVE the help). Yesterday, I left the barn before him to get the milk to the house and strain it. He was doing some last minute things in there and I didn't think to remind him about our triple security gate latch system that keeps the cows out of the grain side of the barn.
I took care of the milk and washed everything up and off we went to the movies. I got back from the movies at 9:30 p.m. and my daughter went to close up the ducks and chickens. She always does a quick barn scan when closing up the poultry to make sure all is in order with the cows. All was not in ORDER!!!!!
The cows were on the grain side and everything that could be knocked over or pooped on, (fans, buckets, egg baskets) was. The 5 gallon bucket of molasses was completely tipped over and empty and some of the sweet feed and a bunch of BOSS had been eaten. They weren't able to get into the COB or the chicken feed.
I busted out the baking soda and put a handful of it down Bella's throat. She was not happy. Nellie was a lot easier because all I had to do was put a handful of the powder on the table and she would just lick it all up. She ate several handfuls this way. I checked on them for a couple of hours before going to bed. They were both cudding each time I checked them. I called Joann at 10:30 and she said it was good that they were cudding and that I was VERY VERY lucky. Phew! This morning both big cows are acting normal. Disaster averted!
