Of course my two are sucking and licking each other's ears. I read thru the posts on this and this is normal but not good. I take their buckets down when they are thru because i figured sucking the air probably wasnt good either, would it hurt to leave the buckets hanging on the wall until i got thru with the other animals? I have put the little heifer's on the ground and let her drink the minute drops left in her bucket while i finish holding the bull's. I was just wondering if playing or sucking on the buckets would ease up the urge to suck on each other ears after they are thru nursing. They don't normally suck on each others ears but maybe 5 or 10 minutes, they are getting to the point that they try bumping each other away when one of them tries.
Next question is about flies...how do you keep the flies out of their feed pan. I keep calf starter a handful or two all day long in their stall, i change it out 2 to 3 times a day with fresh because I cant stand that the flies have been on it. How do you manage to keep flies out of it, i never had this problem with foals because the mares always cleaned up what the foals didnt eat.. Also flies around the eyes, they make fly mask for foals but I havent been able to find any for calves. I thought about buying a couple of foal mask and redesigning it somehow, but i hate to spend the money on them only to find out they wont work out. Any suggestions? Right now I am taking a paint brush and Swat and brushing it around on their cheeks, on forehead, down nose which helps, but i am so afraid that they might get it in their eyes or one of them will lick it off the other but if i dont put something on there they will be teary eyed before the day is over.
TIA
