Is the amount of noise a heifer makes when she starts coming in season indicative of how noisy she will be as a cow?
I have a jersey heifer here who has to be going for the world record for bunging it on. This is her 3rd season & I'm not sure how much more of this I can stand. I'm really noise phobic & this is torture. She sounds less like a bulling heifer & more like a National Geographic documentary where the lions are slaughtering the wilder beasts & there are wounded & dying & orphaned wilder beasts everywhere - & she sounds like the whole darn herd, not just one!!!! We live in a valley & the echoing is making it 10 times worse!
What is the youngest age one would deliberately get a heifer bred? She's a disgustingly healthy, cheeky, very well grown girl who has always been & is still on her mum on pasture & gets a small amount of grain & some lucern hay every day since she was big enough to want it. She was born 15/09/2010 ... so that makes her 10 months old.
Her mother & all my other cows are silent - completely silent - which I love! They do give the odd really soft little moo & make a few other cute sounds which I love - but no bellowing thank goodness. If she does this all her life & she's going to live here she'll have to be kept bare foot & pregnant every month of her reproductive life!
After reading about the heifer on this forum who got in calf at 4 months old & delivered a healthy heifer calf with no problems I'm getting tempted to forget to close the gate properly - only joking - sorta!
Are there any ways to shut her up or distract her? I think she's even annoying the other cows at this point!
