Hi,
I've lurked for a couple of months now, but am finally posting...needing help, of course. I just got my first dairy cow two months ago. She is a registered four year old Jersey. She has calved twice. I got her from a local dairy that routinely cull cows for one reason, or another. She is very small and was being culled because she did not give the industry standard amount of milk. She gives a gallon and a quart to a gallon and half at each milking.
After owning her for a week I began to get some clots from her front, right udder. There was no swelling, fever, or other signs of a problem. I just got yellow, butter colored clots. The first day it was alot and then not so many for about a week. I then went several days without seeing any and then they came back. For the past month and a half she has continued to have these clots. They may go away for a milking, or two, but then I will see them again...usually just one, or two. We've considered treating her with antibiotics, or sending a culture off, but we just haven't.
I milked her this morning and didn't get any clots out of that udder. When milking time came tonight I noticed her udders looked REALLY full. When I began washing them off, to prepare for milking, I realized right away something wasn't right. Her front LEFT udder is now VERY swollen and it is warmer than the others. When I began milking her a couple of clots immediately came out and a clear fluid. The right udder, that has been giving me trouble since I've owned her, was still normal sized and I may have got one small clot out of it. She didn't milk any harder than usual and didn't show any signs of pain, but it is VERY swollen. She gave her normal amount of milk from both front quarters, but did not give as much as usualy out of her real quarters, which are usually much fuller.
I'm just not sure if I have two different issues going on, or if there was mastitis in the right udder that has now spread to the left, even though their is different symptoms in each udder. She was in with a large herd when I bought her, and the conditions were VERY unsanitary. At times she was up to her belly in muck and manure. I keep her in a large dry pasture and there is no other cows here.
Thanks for any advice anyone may have to share!
