my four week old bottle calf developed bloody diarrhea last saturday the 14th. So i started medicating her milk with neomycin sulfate. she nursed well saturday, sunday, and monday but still had blood in stool. Monday evening she was dull and had a 106 degree fever. So I gave her baytril and flunix. Baytril did it's job and no fever the next morning, tuesday. But tuesday was a very bad day for her. the worst day. wouldn't nurse her bottle, wouldn't nurse afternoon electrolytes. so i got worried and took fecal sample to vet which tested negative for coccidiosis. vet thought we ought to send tissue sample for bvd which came back negative wednesday. Originally, her fecies were manure mixed with blood, progressed to blood with chunks of tissue (?) by monday, then straight water and blood by wednesday. finally drove a fecal sample to a lab to be tested for salmonella, rotavirus, e. coli, and coronavirus. unfortunately, i don't think i'll get any results until monday.
as of now, she is doing well, no fever. She nurses her bottle twice a day and takes afternoon electrolytes. However, i don't know how much longer her intestines will survive. The straight blood and water is awful. is there anything i can do until i get test results? All i've been doing is flunix and electrolytes with probiotic. Scared to do any neomycin and strip good stomach bacteria, also scared to do any antibiotic if it's salmonella and causes release of endotoxins. don't want to stop her up if she's trying to pass something. does anyone have any other ideas? any experience with salmonella? she's been sick for a week now. I looked on the internet and don't think that rotavirus and coronavirus last this long but i'm unsure. By the way, i wormed, vaccinated, and transported her to new facility 3 days prior, so i'm almost sure she has ingested something while her immune system was compromised.
