I lost my beloved cow Sophie J Thursday afternoon to calving complications.
She was so sweet, had such a great personality and loved my kids!
Her labor started 16 days past her due date which was May 3rd (she went 14 last year so I wasn't to concerned), but I had been checking her 3X a night for 12 days. At 1:00am on May 19th she seemed to start labor...she paced the stall (12X12) and just had the look of things were maybe moving. I left after about 20 minutes and thought I get some sleep and check her at 3:00 to see how things were progressing. When I got out there at about 2:45 I found her pinned up against the wall with all four feet under her like a crouching cat! I rolled her to her side but could not move her from the wall (she was facing to close and could not get enough room to get up). I got my DH up and he helped pull her to the center of the stall where she lay for the rest of her labor. She labored and I worried, finally at 7:00 I called the vet, I was feeling labor was moving to slow. My vet felt she was progressing and I should just chill. My gut told me something was wrong! By 10:30am we had 3 feet coming out, two fronts and one hind. No matter what my vet did we could not turn the calf and in the end our conclusion was it was some kind of deformed monster that could not pass through the birth canal. At some point C-section was discussed but Sophie was to exhausted to get up. We put her down at 1:30 pm. Feeling like if only I could have..... I look at her empty stall her collar and bell and just cry. She will always be missed
