Ingy left yesterday evening and as I was milking her yesterday morning (for the last time) I was very sad and emotional. She of course, was sweet. I did my thing all day and came home later in the afternoon to spend a little time with her before she got picked up by her new family. I called her in from the pasture and when she got to the gate you could see that her eyes had been watering. It was windy and grit had been flying around all day, and the neighbor was harrowing his field but I still wonder if she had leaked a few tears throughout the day just like I had. I could tell that she knew something was up. I let her in to the barn and brushed her. She just hung out there with me, seemingly enjoying my company and wanting scritches. When the family got here to get her she was very solicitous and friendly with the kids, let a 7 year old girl lead her around. And when the time came, hopped in the trailer as relaxed as could be. I got a message later that when she got to her new home she played in her water for a while (she does this a lot) and then tucked into her hay. I really think she knew what was going on. She was the last cow left here and it was eerily apparent that she knew she was next to go. Not only that but resigned and actually a little bit curious about the next part of her life. I realize I'm personifying a lot of her behavior here, but you should have seen her stoically allowing the kids to hug on her (she was free to walk away) and walking herself right into the trailer...
I miss her tons but know she is the right cow for this family. She's one of the many "cow ambassadors" that have left KFC homes just to go out into the world and create new ones. Cheers to Ingy and to me and to all of the sold cows and all of the sobbing milkmaids the've left behind.
