I have posted about Gertie's odd quarters before. She has two quarters milking great, the front ones. In the back, the left quarter is completely flat and apparently has never filled out. The right back quarter is bigger, but way smaller than the front. the teat is small and hard to grab, but i have been able to get a tiny bit of milk out. i have only had her since january and i never milked this teat because i never got enough out to amount to anything and i thought it was basically dry.
but today i got curious and thought it might look a little bigger, so i started trying to milk it. i can barely get my hand on her teat, it is so small. but i started getting quite a bit of milk out, so i decided to try to empty it. then i tasted it, and it was SALTY! now i wonder if she has had mastitis in that quarter all along and i never knew it?? no lumps in the milk, no stringy, no slimy, just salty. the quarter is quite small and soft. nothing looks amiss, its just salty.
so what do i do? treat her for mastitis? milk out that quarter every day? i cant believe it has milk in it after i hadnt milked from it ever. although i had seen her adopted calf suck it very briefly. can i dry that quarter up?
thanks for any help. oh, and i want to do a treatment (if this is mastits) that will not affect the using of her milk from the front quarters.
also, dont know if this is related, but i have had to do lots of tweaking with her minerals to get the flavor of her milk sweet. the other has never been salty though, only "strong" and kind of "cowy"
thanks!!
