You would NOT believe what I found in the cow barn this morning! I knew something was up when I got to the hay room door and heard the pump running. I KNOW it wasn't running last night when I left. I figured Zippitydoodah must have gone under the bar into the stanchion and bumped the switch with his nose, but when I opened the connecting door and looked in, I was shocked at the scene!
All three of them, Bandit, Cricket, and baby, stopped and froze and they all looked at me with very big eyes. "Uh-oh, it's MOM! We're BUSTED!!!!" It was total carnage!
Knowing these three, I reconstructed the events as follows. Zippy (he's not stupid anymore, and he's DEFINITELY not lethargic!) must have been in the stanchion playing. Whether he's the electrical whiz who turned the pump on or not is still in doubt, but Bandit must have fussed enough and banged on the bar enough that she jiggled out the big nail that's stuck through the bar to keep it in place. The bar and the nail were on the floor. Both the chairs in there were overturned, the jar of chlorhexadine (which had been on the high shelf, so that was one of the girls) was on the floor, all covered in poop, there was poop and pee all over the whole stanchion area, including the bar on the floor which I had to PICK UP and the vacuum hose coming out of the Milk Sucker box and looped up on a big hook on the wall was lying on the floor sucking up god knows what. I suspect Bandit got the vacuum hose down.
They were all looking very innocent and pointing at each other. They'd been locked inside last night because of the snowstorm coming right in the barn door, so there was poop and pee all over the barn floor as well, which I had expected, but I had NOT expected the rest of it! There was, however, absolutely NO poop in either of the stalls. Apparently this was an all night party and nobody went to bed.
I just stood there, surveying the mess for a minute, and I couldn't even get mad. I guess that's what I get for leaving all three of them locked in the barn with the little troublemaker out loose. He takes after his mom. It took me about 10 minutes to clean everything up and put everything back to rights so I could even THINK about milking! LOL!
I've only been leaving Mr. Zippity out at night because I've been having to hand milk Bandit and he's now able to empty both left hand quarters, leaving me only two to have to deal with, but I think starting tonight, it's going to be sad news for him because he's going to have to start spending the night in his stall. At least when he's in there, Bandit won't fuss over him and start disassembling the barn.
There's never a dull moment when you have cows, is there?
