This whole family cow is having way more obstacles than I every thought it would. First there was the bottle babies Ellie and belle, Belle died of pneumonia, and Ellie is unbreedable (even though she past her tube test as a baby)
So Hubby wanted to wait till spring to get a milk cow, so March came and then we found Rosie sweet as pie used as a nurse cow and had been milked in the past. Brought her home and she was drying herself off brought her back and got our money back.
Now our newest problem is our Lucy bought her from the dairy 10 miles away knew she was over 300 days in her lactation and not due till October, with BST treatments only giving 2 gallons a day, we got a bull calf with her, not hers, thinking that with our schedules that we would see now she does with nurse cow thing and get her use to us. At first she just tolerated the calf but know she loves him. Sounds good except she is aggressive starts pawing at the ground if I go inside the gate, our dog almost got killed by her 2 days ago, and will not let the chickens come in her area (our chickens free range) I feel very unsafe with her. So here are my questions
Is there any chance that she will get better?
Could it be the BST?
I thought about selling the calf, but how about this fall when she has her own, we need to share milk
Would you guys keep her? Would really like to see if she has a heifer.
Would it be better if we had another cow in her pen, thought about putting Ellie in with her as she is friendly towards us but still has her horns so is head cow in with the other (beef) heifers
Has anyone else had this many problems with just wanting one milk cow? I am very discouraged.
PS We have tried tough love, we are the boss kind of thing and she pushed her way out.
Would love some advice as I am ready to throw in the towel on the whole thing
