Mastitis..... RETURNED? or did it ever leave?!!!
This thread topic is about Doris. You may remember me posing a little about her a month ago- but I'll update you.....
Doris is a Holstien (cross with something? but she's a milking lady!)
Doris is a nurse cow only-- I have never milked her myself but she was bought at a dairy replacement auction so she has spent her first lactation on a dairy line. I bought her because her love for babies...... well...... she used to love them all-- before this! now she's a bit cranky
she's even cranky with ME!! today she kicked the SNOT outta my leg trying to get her into the chute to dr her quarter.
anyways- back to the point.....she came down with mastitis a month ago-- I caught it within a couple of days because I had let all the cows and calves stay together a few days because I was a bit under the weather..... and my husband is NOT as observant to details..... the details are my job--- but obviously I failed at the details myself this time.
I had fought the last round of mastitis with everything I had been advised..... and took her to the vet when the production started slowing in that quarter and I couldnt get anything out of it without a milking needle. The vet worked and worked and bored at the teat and got it flowing good..... but just for that day! he told me she was stopping production in that quarter and that I had fought the infection well.... that there was nothing else I could do but hope she came back into milk in it when she freshend.
well...... apparantly she started producing in it again and I didn't notice and she has set up a WHOPPING case of nasty nasty mastitis--- talking about some yucky stuff coming out of that girl!
So I was suggested to try puting a peroxide/water mix into it for a few days....... I have done about 4 or 5 doses of that.......
I called the vet today and he told me since I'm not consuming the milk myself that I need to give her nuflor since the infection is bloody and full of puss....... and to start inserting pennicillin or the mastitis treatment into it once daily for 3 days..........
anyone got any other suggestions? I don't want to kill the quarter until its a MUST..... she was such a good momma before this issue. makes me sad! but after she kicked me today I was NOT feeling sorry for her at the moment! I was feeling sorry for my LEG!!! I got kicked by a calf yesterday and I just THOUGHT that hurt........
