It is with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes that I have to tell you that we lost our MollyMoo when our barn caught fire last night . I am still in shock. We also lost a goat and her two kids, one of our new lambs and a number of chickens. The fire was most likely started by a heat lamp - or faulty electricals. Please, Please if you are using heat lamps make sure they are safe. In future I will only be using lambie jammies for my newborn goats and lambs in the cold as needed and the chickens will be bedded down in hay.
We are incredibly blessed that our thirteen other sheep, four goats two dozen hens and MollyMoo's four month old heifer calf, Lulu survived. One of the sheep (that lost a lamb) is pretty badly burned and the calf has some burns. My wonderful vet was here for free first thing this morning to treat them and we're hoping they will be OK. My vet is a member of a dairy farming family here (and daughter of our state vet!). We got Mollymoo from them when she was 6 weeks old and she went back there to be bred (AI'ed and put in with a bull) last year. It was the first time our vet had seen Lulu and she proudly pointed out to me that Lulu is polled, which means she is the daughter of their red roan bull after all. Those dear people even offered me another heifer to replace MollyMoo! And friends and neighbors are building me a chicken coop as I write. You may remember, I posted back in November that just when I had my cow share program going and everything in order for the winter I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Talk about a tough couple of months! BUT...we will get through this. I keep telling myself God doesn't give you more than you can handle...man...he must think a lot of me right now Apologies for sharing sad news. I know this post will make many of you cry with me. The firefighters told me the animals likely suffocated and didn't suffer long. I can only hope. And if this prevents just one of you all having a barn fire, it's worth sharing...
