We have been anxiously awaiting the birth of Mimsy's calf. Its here!!! We have been watching her for the past three days, day and night. Her udder blew up huge today so I knew she would have it soon. It was warmer today 38 degrees so happy about that.
Of coarse we have been watching her walk around with her tail out all day and generally looking uncomfortable. She never stopped eating though. We had to go pick up my son from a friends birthday party and run to the store for a couple things. Well you know how it goes if you go to the store thats when she will calve. Thats what I told my husband when we pulled in the drive way. Well I ran up to the shed where she is at, opened the door and see a bloody but sticking out at me. Of coarse at this time I dont know what to think, a million thoughts went through my head as I looked around. Well sure enough there in the shadow of the wall is a cute little spotted calf. At this point I am jumping up and down and screaming for my husband to come. (I get a little excited) Well its a pretty spotted Jersey calf so of coarse it must be a bull since that is the rule, if its pretty its a boy. So I am peeking around tring to figure out what it is, when my husband comes. He walks in there picks up the tail and what do ya know theres two holes. Oh my goodness at this point I am ready to cry I am so happy. Its a little pretty heifer!!!! She is out of our old mini Jersey bull, he threw almost all heifers, only one bull calf out of him to date. So I got a spotted heifer out of my favorite cow. I am just so pleased right now. The kicker is she is red and white with a little heart on her forehead. Just in time for Valentines day
Mimsy's udder is ginormous, I am very intimidated by her udder right now. Last year it was barely half this size. She filled out nicely. The problem I am having is our milker pump went out and I am going to have to hand milk 10 gallons. We will see how things go. Will post some pics here in a minute.
