...sooner or later. I let Flash and Cody out this morning to go potty while it was still dark and they tangled with a skunk.
The reek that hit me full in the face when I opened the door to let them back in made me stagger. Flash made it in the door before I could stop him (I was still staggering, choking, and my eyes were squinted shut!), ran across the living room, out to the kitchen, and laid down on his bed, rubbing his face on it.
I got out the bottle of Skunk Deodorizer and some cleaning rags, and started soaking the rags in it and rubbing him down best I could. Poor thing! He was gagging, too, and drooling all over the floor. I think he got some in his mouth. Then I went out with more rags and wiped Cody down well. He's OK now because he's got short hair, but Flash needs another treatment (or three). Flash has long hair and a dense undercoat (he's part Norwegian Elkhound) and I can't get the smell completely out. He's not as bad as he was, but oh, my. Of course, I also got it on my jeans where both of them rubbed against me, and did I think to put rubber gloves on before I touched them? Geeeeeez.... I have a few loads of laundry to do today now, plus working on Flash some more. At least he's stopped drooling now.
I had all the windows in the house open and it's only 50 degrees outside, with a brisk wind, so we were freezing in here and finally had to shut them again. The whole house is permeated with skunk.
We know where the skunk is denning (under one of the sheds), and we're trying to think of a good way to flush him out so Rich can shoot him. I thought of trying to smoke him out, but I'm not sure how to go about that, other than light a fire in front of one of the holes and blow the smoke in, but I worry about that old shed. It's the original homestead cabin and it's been here for at least a hundred years. I don't want to light a fire anywhere near it, to be honest. It would go up in seconds if it caught fire.
Do you think running water under there would do any good? We have a hydrant right near there that we could put a hose on and flush water underneath.
HELP? PLEASE???
