Or simply a mistake in my record keeping? lol
I had brought Snickers (a coming 5 year old 5th freshener) up thinking she was settled to the buck break outs (would have made her due 1/25&26 or 2/4&5). About the end of January, middle of February, it became clear she was not settled to any of those due dates. There was another possibility that would have made her due 2/25. That came and went and I finally dragged her back down to the goat pen and through her in with Remmie and his harem. Resigning myself to July/August kids out of this fabulous Boer momma. Assuming she would even settle. This is a doe who will accept any foster I put on her when she kids. Doesn't matter if it is an entirely different breed, she raises two fine babies each year for us.
I was looking at her about a week ago and noting the change in udder. So I went looking for more dates. Found one more buck escape done by Remmie. This would put ehr due 4/13, along with Fern, another Boer doe he bred during his escape). So she got her CD/T booster three days ago. I just wasn't sure though. She had a lot of udder and lost her mucous plug. Two nights ago I commented to dad that I would not be shocked to come down find kids on the ground out of Snickers. I could not find any indication in my breeding notebook that I she had been in heat and bred. At that stage we were still hand breeding everything. So it was all controlled and witnessed.
Sure enough I went down to feed yesterday and she ahd delivered a single doeling sometime the night before. Went back and looked at my notes and still have no idea how or why this kid came to be.
There are two most likely posibilites and a third slim possibility and a fourth very unlikely. She could have come into heat and I bred her to Kidd, but forgot to write it down and then got overwhelmed with all the other does I was breeding so continued to forget. The date she most likely bred does not have any notes in the Notebook or on the days surrounding it I don't think. Or we were maybe still letting the bucks out to pasture at that point (I don't recall but I thought we had stopped) and she jumped out of the doe pen, was bred by one of the 8, and jumped back in without me ever knowing. The third possibility (not likely and I would have expected to see mroe by now) is she was bred through the fence. The last, and most unlikely is that our Boer dud managed to settle her. He has persistant penile frenulum. This menas he cannot pull his penis out more than about 4-6 inches. We've been using him as a marker/teaser buck. He wears a harness and runs with the doe herd.
So I have a doling who I have no clue who the daddy is or even how she came to be for sure. I'm assuming it is simply a case where I never wrote down the hand breeding.
This isn't something that has happened the past few years since I started hand breeding.
