Hey Guys:
I've apparently got a problem ro two, and I don't have a clue what to do. We lucked into an unexpected windfall of rabbits a month or so ago. My sister and her 4H group did California meat rabbits, and they gave all 44 eight week old rabbits to us when they were done! We gave some to Melissa and more to other friends and still have 20 odd bunnies. We've been working on the individual cages, but have had most of the bunnies in communal chicken tractors as temporary holding pens. They are going into their permanent homes this weekend. We've been feeding them Manna Pro rabbit pellets and alfalfa hay. All have seemed to grow nicely. However, we have had 3 individual sudden deaths, and I don't know why. Everyone seems fine in the morning, but by evening, one will be dead. One looked fine but was just dead, and the other two have had bloody rear ends. This last one had opaque eyes, as well. I do have a hospital pen where two with lumps under the skin of their chests and bellies have been kept. I don't know what to make of them, either, as they act just fine. But if any were going to die, I would have thought it would have been them! Both bunnies have grape sized lumps, but one had several lumps that appeared to have burst open! I cleaned the wounds as best I could and isolated the two who seem perfectly fine, otherwise. They've been separated for weeks now, and though the lumps seem to have healed over and are smaller, they still have them. All of these rabbits went to their county fair, but that's been more than a month ago, so I wouldn't think any of these problems date from exposure there. What do you rabbit experts think?
