They are here! Finally! Hannah Banana (yup, it's on her AKC papers!) had her puppies. This is her second litter ever. After her first, we decided to give her a year off, then rebreed her again. She didn't take so now here we are, another whole cycle later and we've just had a nice litter of four!! Two boys and two girls. There was one more girl, but she was born dead.
Hannah was bred to a maltese. In our area, the demand is big for a small, apt possible dog that has hypo allergenic possibilities. We are a LOT of military and folks like to have a small dog live with them as an alarm in their homes and then when they move, the dogs are still easy to take with them as well as get under the standard "30 lbs" issue to be allowed into the next apt. they might be moved to. So this was a very planned cross for Hannah.
The birth went very smoothly. They are all fresh and wiggly and settled in a nice clean area (for now, I'm sure I'll be cleaning that out again tomorrow morning!). Usually, I take my mama's over to be groomed by my breeder a few days after the births as she will do the tails and claws for me then, but this time, the tails don't need docked (I'm so glad!!). However, my daughter worked for the same lady during the summer and learned how to clean and cut a toy poodle pretty well. My daughter is also working off her share of car insurance. So she will clean our currently greenish looking mama in a few days.
We have one more that was taken to be bred and if she's pregnant, will be due in a couple more weeks. Her name is Foot (it's on her AKC papers as Foot Loose and Fancy Free) and she is also a toy poodle and is Hannah's sister from the same litter (I also still own mom, but she doesn't have puppies any more). Last time, she only had one and we had a hard time even being able to tell is she was actually pregnant. When the puppy came, it had to be pulled and was born dead. Fortunately, her own mother had JUST had her last litter for us and she let Foot help "mother" the puppies with her...feeding, cleaning, etc. It was so sweet. They were all in my room that time and I used to just watch them for hours.
Normally speaking we try and only have two litters once a year, or once every 18 months, depending. I have four kids and myself. We play with the puppies, teach them to eat food, start them on crate training and outside potty training after all meal times. I take them to the vet before they leave to their new homes for an "inspection" and shots, but also worm them along the way and give shots. These are well loved puppies and it gives us huge joy to have them every so often and be able to hopefully, send them off to the very BEST homes.
Sigh.... I'm tired. I bet Hannah is more tired!
