We have three trees down and five more heavy tree tops off the trees. Driving wind and rain for about twelve hours and we probably have 12-24 more before Hurricane Frances is through with us. The roof (it was only a tarp) tore off the barn so Gita has nowhere to get away from the storm. When we went down to milk tonight the rain pelted my face and stung as though someone were throwing pebbles at it - really, it was that strong. We got three quarters completely stripped and had the last nearly done when Gita left the barn. She was clipped but pulling to get away and we let her go as she has never done this and we didn't want her to panic and hurt herself. We were of course milking in the elements as the roof was gone. Poor Gita. She was shivering every now and then. She had a good appetite, ate all her dinner, but I am worried about the constancy of the storm and her inability to escape. Is there something I can do? Could I make her a blanket, and if so, how would I fasten it on and keep her from becoming entangled in it? I have an old blanket here I could cut to size. What will happen if she gets really chilled? Will she get pneumonia? It is not really cold here, I mean, this is Florida, but being wet and having the wind just not let up...I was cold myself after being out 45 minutes for the milking. What should I look for as the danger signs that she is ill, and what should I do? (Ideas of things I can do without a vet are appreciated, as a vet can't get to me in this storm.) Thanks!
